Elephant menace in Odisha: Woman MLA forced to walk down 7 km to see the extent of damage herself

Karanjia, Jan 22: Karanjia MLA Basanti Hembram was forced to walk down 7 km to pacify villagers who were protesting against elephant menace. According to reports, hundreds of villagers were protesting in front of Dudhiani forest range office against extensive damage in Tata, Kunjia, Biunria and Nakudamata villages by elephant herd. The herd has wrecked havoc in the area damaging over five houses besides destroying acres of vegetable cultivation and banana farming in the last one month. Irate over the incident, the villagers today gheraoed the Dudhiani forest range office and later blocked National Highway 220 disrupting vehicular movement on the busy road. On being informed about the incident, local MLA Basanti Hembram reached the spot to pacify the irate villagers who insisted her to walk with them all the way to their village to witness the damage caused by the elephant herd. The woman MLA was with no option but to walk to visit the affected area.
