Election Commission to take decision on holding poll rallies, roadshows today

New Delhi, Jan 15: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sushil Chandra today will take a call on political gatherings in the five poll bound states for the upcoming elections in February 2022.

Before taking the decision, CEC Chandra will be holding a series of virtual meetings with the Health Secretary, Chief Secretary, and Chief Electoral Officers of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa to take a stock of the COVID-19 situation in these states.

Chandra will first interact with Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan who will brief him about the overall picture of Covid Cases in the country and measures taken, instructions issued to states to combat the surge of Covid-19 cases.

Following this, Chandra will meet with the Health Secretary and Chief Secretary of poll-bound five states and finally he will be holding a discussion with the Chief Electoral Officers of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa.

Notably, Election Commission of India (ECI) on January 8 decided that no physical rallies, roadshow, pad-yatra, cycle/bike/vehicle rally and procession shall be allowed till January 15, 2022.

A call on the political gatherings will be taken after January 15 depending on the dynamic situation of the pandemic`s third national wave, Chandra said while announcing the restriction on January 8. Chandra also informed that the duration of polling will be extended by an hour amid the Covid restrictions.
