ECI Suspends Four Kolkata Police Officers Over Tension Near Amit Shah's Convoy

Kolkata, April 4: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered the suspension of four officers from Kolkata Police, including a Deputy Commissioner, following an incident of tension near the convoy of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and West Bengal Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari on April 1.

The incident occurred as the convoy was nearing the Alipore Survey Building in South Kolkata, where Adhikari was scheduled to file his nomination for the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency.

The four officers facing suspension are Deputy Commissioner-II (South) Siddhartha Dutta, Officer-in-Charge of Alipore Police Station Priyankar Chakraborty, Additional Officer-in-Charge Chandi Charan Banerjee, and Sergeant Saurabh Chatterjee.

On Saturday, ECI Secretary Sujeet Kumar Mishra sent a communication to West Bengal Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala, directing the immediate suspension of the officers and initiating departmental proceedings against them. The letter further stipulated that a compliance report should be submitted by 11:00 a.m. on April 5, 2026. The communication also called for urgent proposals to fill the resultant vacancies.

Before this, the Kolkata Police had issued show-cause notices to Dutta and Deputy Commissioner-II (Reserve Force) Manas Roy in connection with the incident.

In a virtual meeting earlier this week, newly-appointed Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand faced strong criticism from Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The CEC questioned why the police had not acted in advance to prevent the escalation of tension, underscoring concerns over the security lapses.

The police have registered two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) based on complaints filed at two police stations in South Kolkata regarding the incident.
