EC defers Pipili by-poll due to Covid surge

Bhubaneswar, May 3: In view of Covid situation in the country, the Election Commission of India has postponed the Pipili by-poll along with two other Assembly constituencies of West Bengal till further notice. Earlier, the Pipili by-poll was to be originally conducted on April 17 but was postponed after the demise of Congress candidate Ajit Mangaraj due to Covid 19 on April 14. It was then rescheduled to be held on May 16. The commission after taking all material facts and inputs of CEO West Bengal and CEO Odisha in consideration and taking note of the lockdown and restrictions has deferred the scheduled poll and extended the period of by elections in Pipili constituency of Odisha and Jangipur & Samserganj constituencies of West Bengal. Fresh date will be intimated after assessing the pandemic situation. Along with that, the commission also directed that MCC in these Assembly Constituencies to be lifted with immediate effect and it will further be operation from next date of notification.
