Guwahati, Sep 14: A powerful earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck Assam’s Udalguri district on Sunday at 4:41 PM, sending tremors across parts of North Bengal and neighbouring Bhutan. According to the National Center for Seismology, the quake originated at a shallow depth of 5 kilometers, with its epicenter located in the town of Udalguri.
Panic gripped residents in Guwahati and other nearby areas as people rushed out of buildings fearing aftershocks. However, no reports of injuries or property damage have been received so far.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the seismic activity and reiterated that the northeastern region of India lies in a high seismic zone, making it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured citizens that there has been no significant damage or loss of life reported.
“We are actively monitoring the situation,” he stated.
Former Assam Chief Minister and current Union Minister for Ports, Sarbananda Sonowal, also addressed the incident on social media.
“Major earthquake in Assam. My prayers for everyone's safety and well-being. Urge all to stay alert!” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
