New Delhi, July 30: Petrol blended with 20 per cent ethanol (E20) may reduce vehicle fuel economy by around 2 to 6 per cent, depending on the type and age of the vehicle, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
In a written reply to Parliament, Gadkari said the impact on fuel efficiency varies across vehicle categories and vintages. However, he clarified that extensive engine durability tests conducted on dynamometers, along with on-road vehicle trials, have not reported any engine failures attributable to the use of E20 fuel.
The minister highlighted several advantages of E20, stating that it offers improved acceleration, better ride quality and produces nearly 30 per cent lower carbon emissions compared to E10 petrol, making it a cleaner alternative despite the marginal reduction in fuel economy.
