Bhubaneswar, Oct 1: With Durga Puja just a week away, preparations have picked up pace across the city and its outskirts. Among the major attractions this year will be a 72-foot-tall idol of Maa Durga at Gangibanta on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.
The Gangibanta Durga Puja Committee, now entering its ninth year, had grabbed attention last year by installing a 62-foot-tall clay idol of Maa Durga.
This year, the committee has decided to make the idol even taller by another 10 feet. Work on the 72-foot idol has already begun.
300 Bamboo Poles Used So Far
The bamboo framework for the idol was started on August 26, following the traditional puja ceremony. Around 300 bamboo poles have already been used for the structure.
Cuttack-based artisan Gopal, along with 15 assistants, is working on the massive idol.
The puja committee is also planning a 40-foot-tall idol of Lord Jagannath at the venue.
30-Ft Lamp Inspired by Ujjain
Another major attraction will be a 30-foot-tall ceremonial lamp, which will be lit in front of Maa Durga during the evening aarti from Saptami to Dashami. The setup is being planned along the lines of the traditional lamp displays associated with Ujjain.
The celebrations will also feature cultural programmes every evening.
Visitors can enjoy a mini market, amusement rides and a variety of street food during the festival.
Focus on Crowd Management
With a large number of devotees expected to visit the venue, the committee has sought cooperation from the administration for crowd management.
Volunteers will also be deployed to help maintain order and assist devotees throughout the celebrations.
With a 72-foot Maa Durga idol, a 40-foot Lord Jagannath idol and a 30-foot ceremonial lamp, Gangibanta Durga Puja is gearing up for a grand celebration this year.
