Bhubaneswar, Oct 4: Kanya Pujan or Kumari puja is one of the key rituals during Navratri. It’s an auspicious ceremony in which devotees worship nine young girls as nine avatars (incarnations) of Goddess Durga.  According to Hindu literature, one girl should be worshipped as a tribute to each form of Durga. It’s believed, by performing Kanya Pujan, one may be blessed with wisdom, strength, and prosperity. The nine young girls are called to puja mandap or home, their feet are washed and the devotees offer them food, clothes, gifts, money. Touching their feet, they beg pardon for their past misdeeds. Maha Navami is the ninth day of Durga Puja. This is the day when Maa Siddhidatri is worshipped. This form of Durga, among the nine forms of the goddess, is considered to be the supreme form of Maha Shakti. According to Hindu mythology, it is on Maha Navami that the goddess killed the demon king Mahishasura.
