Puri, Mar 12: The sacred grounds of the Jagannath Temple in Puri are brimming with devotion and vibrance as Phagu Dashami marks the beginning of the grand six-day Dola Purnima festival.

Observed on the tenth day of the bright fortnight of Phalguna Shukla Paksha, this occasion is one of the most significant cultural events in the temple’s calendar. On Phagu Dashami, special rituals take place, setting the tone for a series of vibrant celebrations, attracting devotees from across the country.

According to sources, the idol of Dolagobinda, representing Lord Jagannath, is taken in a grand procession to the Dola Vedi at Shri Jagannath Ballav Mutt, where the temple priests perform various sacred rituals. This procession marks the onset of the much-anticipated Dola Jatra, one of the 12 major festivals observed at the iconic 12th-century shrine.

Phagu Khela, a playful and joyous celebration during this time, holds profound significance in the culture of Odisha. The event commemorates the eternal love of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha, with devotees engaging in playful throwing of colors, symbolizing the vibrant bond shared between the divine couple. The spiritual and festive spirit of this day brings an overwhelming sense of joy to the community.

Devotees also consider it highly auspicious to witness the Darshan of the three presiding deities-Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra-between Phagu Dasami and Dola Purnima. The deities are adorned in their traditional 'Chacheri Besha,' and the temple serves a special offering known as 'Chacheri Bhog' until Chaturdashi. This is believed to bring blessings and spiritual prosperity to those who partake in the divine darshan.

Sanghamitra Sahoo explained, “Phagu Dasami is a celebration of divine love and the beginning of the Dola Purnima festival. It holds deep spiritual importance, as it celebrates the bond between Lord Krishna and Radha, and also brings the community together through rituals that transcend mere religious observance."

Rupak Parida added, "For us, Dola Yatra is more than a festival; it is a time to reconnect with our roots, our traditions, and our cultural heritage. The procession of Dolagobinda symbolizes the divine presence, and the joyous Phagu Khela creates an atmosphere of unity and devotion. It’s a reminder of the divine love that binds us all together, irrespective of differences."

On Dola Purnima, the deities are draped in golden attire, further heightening the grandeur of the festival. As the festivities unfold, Srimandir becomes a hub of devotion, drawing a sea of devotees who are eager to partake in the auspicious rituals. The temple, with its age-old customs and vibrant celebrations, remains a beacon of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.

The Dola Jatra not only celebrates the love of Lord Krishna and Radha but also serves as a powerful reminder of the cultural unity and devotion that define the spirit of Puri.
