Berhampur, April 12: The Berhampur Police in Odisha arrested two fraudsters from Gujarat on Saturday in connection with the alleged digital arrest of Berhampur University Vice-Chancellor Professor Geetanjali Dash.
The VC was duped of over Rs 14 lakh by the cyber criminals, promising her to release from the digital arrest.
Berhampur SP Dr. Saravana Vivek M said the notorious fraudsters were nabbed from Gujarat after frantic manhunts, based on their mobile numbers and bank accounts.
According to the complaint, the cybercriminals informed the VC over phone pretending themselves as Enforcement Directorate (ED) Officers that, she has been arrested in connection with a case pending in the Supreme Court.
Later, they demanded Rs 14 lakh to ease the case and free her from the digital arrest,that the VC complied with.
Realising it a cyber fraud, the VC later lodged a complaint with the Berhampur cyber police, which was taken up for investigatin. Based on it, a probe was initiated in this connection and the accused persons were arrested today from Gujarat.
Interrogation to the accused ones is underway.Further efforts are yet on to recover the duped amount from them and uncover the entire fraudulent network, said the SP.
