Bhubaneswar, Mar 24: Had Mahatma Gandhi visited Puri Jagannath Temple? This question was raised by the MLAs in the State Assembly for last couple of days. The question was first raised by Congress MLA Santosh Singh Saluja in the State Assembly yesterday. Again BJD MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik raised the issue today and sought clarification. According to some sources, Mahatma Gandhi had visited Sri Mandir and according to some other sources, he had not gone to the holy and ancient temple. So the confusion over Mahatma Gandhi's visit to Jagannath Temple should be made clear, said Patnaik. Some sources said, Mahatma Gandhi had visited the temple in 1921. However, he didnot go the temple during his visit to Odisha in 1928. At that time Gandhiji's Harijan Movement was on. That is why Mahatma Gandhi didnot go to Puri temple as entry of Harijans to the temple was prohibited. But his wife Kasturba Gandhi and some others had visited the temple stealthily for which Mahatma was upset. Coincidentally, the centenary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi's first visit to Odisha has been started from yesterday.
