Dhenkanal, Oct 23: The air in Dhenkanal is electric with anticipation. Just a day away from the sacred full moon of Kuanra Purnima, the town is transforming into a divine canvas as it prepares to welcome Goddess Dhan-dhatri (Lakshmi) for its iconic, ten-day Gajalakshmi Puja.

For the residents of Dhenkanal, this isn't just a festival; it is an emotional homecoming, a cultural anchor, and a spectacle of unmatched grandeur.

A decade of devotion and reconnections

As the countdown to the celebrations begins, the town is brimming with a palpable joy that defies words. The festivities, kicking off on the 25th, will culminate on November 4th with the grand joint immersion ceremony (Bhasani).

Beyond the religious fervour, the festival serves as a vital bridge for families. Homes are preparing to open their doors to relatives and friends, setting the stage for joyous reunions after a year apart.

A canvas of tradition and modernity

This year, 41 distinct mandaps across the town will host Lakshmi Puja. From the Dhenkanal College Bazaar all the way to the Korean Bypass, the entire town is being draped in vibrant, cascading strings of colorful lights.

A friendly, creative competition is already underway among local puja committees to capture the hearts of onlookers. While iconic, intricately designed cloth arches (kapda torans) will light up commercial hubs like Mina Bazaar, Ganesh Bazaar, Laxmibazaar, Kanchana Bazaar, and Gudia Nali, seven select mandaps—including Kaivalya Bazaar and Deulsahi—will feature the timeless elegance of silver tableaus (Chandi Medhas).

At the core of these artistic marvels are master artisans who are pouring their hearts into crafting clay idols designed to instantly awaken a deep sense of devotion in every visitor.

The pulse of commerce and celebration

The spirit of Gajalakshmi Puja also breathes vibrant life into the local economy. Local merchants and traders have rolled out attractive gift schemes and festive offerings, anticipating a bustling shopping season. Meanwhile, an energetic wave of street vendors, amusement rides, traditional meena bazaars, and fast-food stalls are setting up shop, promising a sensory treat for families and youth alike.

As Dhenkanal immerses itself in glowing lights, festive chatter, and the sweet scent of celebration, the town stands united, ready to lose itself completely in the magic of Mahalakshmi's arrival.
