Derogatory remarks: Abhijit seeks police protection

Bhubaneswar: A day after the Supreme Court declined bail to Abhijit Iyer-Mitra who had allegedly tweeted derogatory comments on Konark Sun Temple architecture, Abhijit’s lawyer in an email to Puri SP Sarthak Sarangi sought proper security during his client’s appearance before the House Committee on October 11. In an e-mail to Puri SP, Abhijit Iyer-Mitra counsel said that Abhijit will appear on October 11 before House Committee which has summoned him for breach of privilege and for that he has asked for proper security. His interim protection granted by the Supreme Court ends today. On Thursday, the apex court denied interim protection to Abhijit. When Iyer's counsel said Abhijit’s life is in danger, CJI Ranjan Gogoi led bench said if your life is in danger, then what better place to stay than jail? Your life will be secure, the bench said. The SC bench said we have seen your remarks on Sun Temple. "Your comments invite religious feelings. How are you entitled to bail?" the bench said. The Delhi -based journalist was earlier arrested on September 20 by Odisha police for his derogatory remarks. He was granted bail by Saket Court in Delhi on the same day. The court granted relief to Mitra on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and one surety of the like amount on a plea moved by him, while directing him to join the investigation at Konark police station by September 28. Meanwhile, Abhijit moved to the apex court which extended relief to him till October 5. Meanwhile, the Odisha Assembly House Committee had decided to summon Abhijit for breach of privilege. He was accused of calling MLAs (buddu) fools.
