Chandigarh, Feb 7: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is undergoing imprisonment in rape and murder case has been released on furlough till February 27 from Sunaria jail in Haryana’s Rohtak district on Monday.
The release of the Dera chief 13 days before Punjab goes to the polls has raised many eyebrows as Ram Rahim has a significant following in poll-bound Punjab.
Meanwhile, the Haryana government called the furlough a “routine legal process” and “a legal right of a convict”.
“A few things work as per the system, our legal provisions, and Constitution of India. It is a legal and administrative process. Any ordinary convict has a legal right of being released on furlough. It has nothing to do with the upcoming polls. Any jail inmate who has completed three years of his or her imprisonment can seek a furlough under the law. Subsequent to the request made by the inmate, the district administration and prison authorities accept or reject it,” Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar told media.
According to sources, Ram Rahim’s family members took him to Gurgaon, where he will be staying for a few days under tight police security.
The Dera chief will be kept under police watch and required to stay at the headquarters in Sirsa for most of the furlough.
Earlier, Ram Rahim was furloughed on May 17, 2021 over his mother’s illness.
His second furlough request was rejected by the district administration. However, the Dera chief managed to get some time out of the prison in his third furlough request.
