New Delhi, September 6: A Patiala House Court on Sunday remanded so-called social media influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj to one day of judicial custody in connection with an alleged attempt to murder case involving Sanjay Azad.

Bhardwaj was produced before Duty Judicial Magistrate First Class Anjali Singh through video conferencing after completing one day in police custody. The Delhi Police had sought 14 days of judicial custody, but the court granted custody for one day and directed that he be produced before the concerned court on Monday.

Bhardwaj was detained from Bulandshahr on September 4 by the Delhi Police Crime Branch and subsequently brought to Delhi. He was arrested in an FIR related to the alleged attack on Sanjay Azad by Bhardwaj and another accused, Suraj.

On Saturday, Special Judge SPS Laler of the Patiala House Court had remanded Bhardwaj to one day of police custody. He was produced at the judge’s residence at the Karkardooma Court complex amid security concerns.

Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel Piyush Sachdeva appeared for Bhardwaj through video conferencing.

According to the grounds of arrest, the case came to light following a purported podcast interview in which Bhardwaj allegedly admitted to hitting Sanjay Azad on the head with akadahe was wearing. The alleged incident took place during a CJP protest at Jantar Mantar on June 23.

Complainant’s counsel Rishav Ranjan said on Friday that they had met a senior Delhi Police officer, who assured them that appropriate sections of the SC-ST Act would be added and Bhardwaj would be arrested within 72 hours. MP Chandrasekhar Azad, Sanjay Azad and other lawyers were present at the meeting held at Parliament Street Police Station.

Bhardwaj was subsequently detained from Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh by the Crime Branch.
