Kathmandu, August 30: The death toll from devastating flash floods in central Nepal rose to 734 on Sunday, as rescue teams continued recovering bodies and searching for nearly 2,500 people still reported missing.

Bodies have been recovered from all eight districts affected by the disaster, with rescuers racing against time to locate survivors and reach people stranded in remote areas. The search and rescue operations entered their fifth day on Sunday.

The disaster struck on Wednesday after an ice-rock avalanche triggered by a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border unleashed a massive torrent of water, mud and debris downstream.

The raging floods swept through towns and villages across central Nepal, causing widespread destruction, damaging vital infrastructure and washing away hydropower facilities.

Rescue teams have been working around the clock amid challenging conditions to assess the damage and locate those still missing.
