Cyclone Yaas: Over 5 lakh people evacuated, windspeed expected between 155-165 kmph

Bhubaneswar, May 25: The state government has successfully evacuated over 5 lakh people ahead of Cyclone ‘Yaas’, informed the Special Relief commissioner Pradeep Jena in a presser today. The storm is approaching the Odisha coast at a speed of 15kmph and it is 140km away from Paradeep coast. After making landfall the cyclone is expected to cross Bhadrak by afternoon and will touch Balasore in the evening. The speed will remain in between 155-165 kmph throughout the day and it may occasionally rise up to 185 kmph in some areas, informed DG IMD. The radius of the Cyclone eye is about 35kms and it is expected to touch Dhamra at 5 am. The wind will start blowing at a speed of 90km-100km from today midnight and increase gradually till the cyclone hits the coast. However, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack lie under violet zones and windspeed is expected to be around 50-60kmph and no major damage is expected in the respective cities, said Jena.
