Cyclone threat over BoB? Clearer picture expected by Oct 25

Bhubaneswar, Oct 22: Odisha is closely monitoring a developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal, with meteorologists expecting a clearer picture of its intensity and possible movement by October 25.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around October 23. The system is expected to move northwestwards and may intensify further. However, cyclone formation and its potential landfall location have not yet been confirmed.

Weather experts, including Sarat Chandra Sahu, head of the Centre for Environment and Climate at SOA University, have said that the system's development over the next 48 to 72 hours will be crucial in determining its strength and trajectory.

According to preliminary forecasts discussed by meteorologists, the system may intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area and subsequently a depression. Its chances of developing into a cyclonic storm, as well as its possible path, are expected to become clearer as more weather data becomes available.

Some weather models have indicated a possible movement towards the Andhra Pradesh or Odisha coast. However, the exact direction and intensity remain uncertain at this stage.

The developing system could influence weather conditions across Odisha during the final week of October. The southern and coastal districts may experience increased rainfall, depending on the system's movement and intensity.

Weather experts have also indicated the possibility of strong winds accompanying the system. However, the timing and severity of the rainfall will depend on subsequent forecasts.

The IMD's latest outlook suggests that rainfall activity in Odisha may increase after October 25, with further updates expected as the system develops.

October is considered an important period for tropical cyclone formation over the Bay of Bengal, particularly during the post-monsoon season. Past powerful cyclones, including the 1999 Odisha Super Cyclone, Phailin and Hudhud, highlight the potential risks associated with such weather systems.

However, experts caution that the strength and path of the current system cannot be determined solely from the season or previous cyclones.

The IMD is monitoring the developing system, and people are advised to follow official weather bulletins for reliable updates on rainfall, wind conditions and any potential cyclone threat.
