Bhubaneswar, Dec 13: The extremely severe cyclone storm, ‘Jawad’, has left behind a trail of devastation in various parts of Odisha. Heavy rainfall has shattered the hopes of paddy farmers in Odisha’s coastal districts, who were expecting bumper crops this year. Hectares of crops sown were damaged not only in the coastal but also the south and northern belts of the State. Farmlands were inundated by the erratic rainwater, triggering a massive loss in the crop yield for the farmers. Districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Puri, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Cuttack, which are known as the ‘rice bowl’ of Odisha, have been majorly affected. Worth mentioning, a six-member inter-ministerial central team on Sunday started assessing the damages caused by Cyclonic Storm Jawad in six districts of Odisha. The team began the spot assessment of damages caused to standing paddy crop and non-paddy crops in the cyclone-affected districts of Cuttack, Jajpur, Ganjam, Puri, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur. The team is expected to submit its report to the Ministry of Home Affairs within a week.
