Cuttack, July 1: In a major crackdown on cybercrime ahead of the annual Puri Rath Yatra, the Cyber Cell of the Crime Branch has taken swift action against online fraudsters. Authorities have identified and shut down 15 fake hotel booking websites created to dupe unsuspecting devotees traveling for the festival.

Acting on multiple complaints and intelligence inputs, the Cyber Cell launched an investigation on June 22. During the probe, officials uncovered a network of 23 fraudulent websites. So far, 15 of these sites have been successfully taken down, with efforts ongoing to block the remaining platforms.

The crackdown comes amid rising concerns over online scams targeting religious tourists. Officials confirmed that the drive to identify and dismantle fake websites will continue until Niladri Bije, the concluding ritual of the Rath Yatra.

In light of these developments, police have issued an advisory urging pilgrims and travelers to follow safe online booking practices:

  • Use only reputable hotel booking websites.

  • Verify bookings by directly contacting the hotel before making payments.

  • Avoid paying the full amount upfront; opt for partial payments.

  • Refrain from using UPI for transactions—prefer internet banking.

  • Be cautious of websites offering rooms at unusually low rates.

  • Always review ratings and customer feedback before booking.

The Crime Branch has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to online hotel bookings.
