CUO conducts second part of workshop on ‘Relative Grading: Moderation of Marks’

Koraput, June 4: The second part of online workshop on ‘Relative Grading: Moderation of Marks’ was organized by Central University of Odisha for the faculty members held on 03rd June 2021.The workshop was conducted by Prof. Meena Hariharan, Eminent Professor in Centre for Health Psychology, University of Hyderabad acted as the Chief Resource person along with  Dr. Meera Padhy and Dr. C. V. Usha, her colleagues. Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof. I. Ramabrahmam conveyed his best wishes for the successful conduct of the workshop and hoped that the faculty of the University will be trained in the essence of Moderation which is an essential part of ensuring integrity in assessing students’ performance. Prof. Sharat Kumar Palita, Director of Internal Quality Assurance Cell and Dean, School of Biodiversity and Conservation of Natural Resources of CUO delivered the opening remarks and mentioned that workshop on relative grading and moderation of marks is mean for right assessment process/ evaluation process of exam. papers and its outcome will benefit our teaching community for providing justice to students and it is step towards ensuring quality in higher education through equity and accountability. The first part of the workshop was held on 28 May 2021.

Prof. Hariharan provided hands-on experience on Moderation of Marks based on the data and feedback received from the faculty members of the Central University of Odisha.  She emphasized the practical aspects of structuring question papers and discussed how important it is to delineate the objectives well before examinations and marking. Dr. Meera Padhi talked about the three sections of moderation that are planning, meeting, and reviewing. She also threw light on the importance of the consistency of judgments. Dr. Usha while talking about the practical aspects of moderating marks suggested having marks consistency within the assessment and across the assessment among the examiners to find out discrepancies while doing moderation. All the resource persons interacted with the participants and clarified their doubts with the help of real data with regard to the moderation of marks.

The closing remarks about the workshop were given by Prof. P. Durgaprasad, Visiting Professor of the Central University of Odisha, and said that the workshop will be definitely helpful to the faculty members of CUO to judge the performance of students in an objective way and which will ensure the assessment outcome as fair, valid and reliable.

All the faculty members participated and interacted in the workshop and the workshop provided participants with new skill sets, information, and a sense of accomplishment. Dr. Ram Shankar, Controller of Examinations extended the vote of thanks, and Dr. Ramendra Kumar Parhi, DSW I/c, coordinated the program and delivered the welcome address.
