Chennai and Hyderabad execute strategic four-player swap deal
Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad recently concluded a major player exchange program to prepare for the upcoming Indian Premier League season. English batting all-rounder Liam Livingstone is shifting his base to Chennai alongside Australian fast-bowling prospect Jack Edwards. To balance this move, Indian left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed and Australian quick Nathan Ellis will head over to the Hyderabad dugout.
Financial realignments
Management in Chennai managed to sign Livingstone for Rs 6 crore, which represents a significant reduction from his previous Rs 13 crore contract. Edwards maintains his Rs 3 crore salary in his new team environment. He missed all matches last year because of a severe foot injury right before he debuted for Australia. Hyderabad reacquires Khaleel at his established Rs 4.8 crore value. He previously played for them from 2018 until 2021. The speedster grabbed 15 wickets across 14 games during his 2025 stint in Chennai but only took the field five times last year before a right quadriceps issue sidelined him. Ellis brings his death-over expertise to his new squad while keeping his Rs 2 crore contract.

Contrasting recent campaigns
Franchise trading dynamics often reflect previous tournament outcomes and current tactical requirements. Hyderabad delivered strong performances last year by finishing third after claiming nine victories and collecting 18 points, though they eventually lost their knockout match against the Rajasthan Royals. Chennai struggled throughout that same period, ending up in eighth place with just 12 points and falling short of playoff qualification. Former champions from Chennai have also restructured their coaching staff completely. Zaheer Khan takes charge as head coach, replacing long-term mentor Stephen Fleming. Mohit Sharma assumes duties as bowling coach. Albie Morkel, Gareth Batty, and Sridharan Sriram step in as assistant coaches, while James Foster remains in his fielding coach position.
