Keonjhar: The State Government today ordered for confiscation of movable and immovable assets of two mining companies in Keonjhar district after they failed to pay penalty for illegal mining activities.
Keonjhar district Collector Ashish Thakare directed the concerned officials to initiate proceedings against MR Das Mines and Arjun Lodha Mines under Odisha Public Demands Recovery Act, 1962.
The Collector’s order came while hearing a certificate case. While Arjun Lodha Mines was fined over Rs 63.42 crore on lease area of 326.05 hectare, MR Das Mines was asked to pay over Rs 2.90 crore as penalty for lease area of 11.537 hectares.
As per Supreme Court directive, the Government had cancelled the lease of Arjun Lodha’s iron and manganese mines at Balagoda and MR Das’ iron mine at Deojhar after they expressed their inability to pay penalty for illegal extraction of minerals between 2000-01 and 2010-10.
