New Delhi, May 6: In a major step towards enhancing transparency in the judiciary, 21 out of the 33 sitting judges of the Supreme Court of India, including the Chief Justice of India (CJI), have publicly disclosed their assets.

The asset declarations of the remaining judges will be published on the Supreme Court’s official website as soon as their updated statements are received. Among those who have already made their assets public are the three judges next in line to become the CJI.

This initiative follows a Full Court meeting of the Supreme Court held on April 1, 2025, during which it was unanimously decided that judges’ asset declarations would be placed in the public domain via the Court’s website.

A statement from the Supreme Court confirmed: "Statements of assets of judges that have already been received are being uploaded. Statements of assets of other judges will be uploaded as and when the current declarations are submitted."

At the April 1 meeting, chaired by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the Full Court resolved that every judge must declare their assets upon assuming office and whenever a significant acquisition is made. These declarations are to be submitted to the CJI and made publicly accessible on the Court's website, making the process mandatory.

This decision comes in the wake of controversy surrounding the alleged recovery of a large sum of cash from the official residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, then serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court.
