Chhatar Jatra: The sacred umbrella that unites Kalahandi

Bhawanipatna: Lakhs of devotees gathered in Bhawanipatna on Monday to witness the sacred Bijaya Chhatar Yatra of Maa Manikeswari, one of Kalahandi’s most significant annual religious events. The ceremonial umbrella began its journey from Jenakhal at 5 am and was scheduled to reach the main temple around 11.30 am.

More than a religious procession, the Chhatar Yatra represents Kalahandi’s cultural identity and deep-rooted devotion to its presiding deity. The ceremonial umbrella, regarded as the moving emblem of Maa Manikeswari, holds a special place in the region’s traditions, drawing devotees from across the district and beyond to seek the goddess’s blessings.

The procession was accompanied by the rhythmic beats of Ghumura and other cultural performances, turning the streets into a vibrant celebration of faith and heritage.
