Chennai rains: IMD warns of cyclonic circulation & heavy rains for next 2 days

7/11/2021 at 9:57 PM

Chennai, Nov 7: Heavy rain in Chennai and nearby areas has prompted authorities to take emergency steps, including an order to schools in four districts to stay shut for the next two days. National Disaster Response Force has been called in to assist in rescue work.

The Tamil Nadu capital and suburbs were lashed by heavy rain on Saturday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting more rainfall over the coming days.

The weather agency has also predicted heavy rainfall in Chennai and neighbouring suburbs over the next three hours. Several areas in Chennai, including Perambur, Koratur, Anna Salai, Guindy, T Nagar, and Adyar went under water.

As heavy rains lashed Chennai and it neighbouring areas overnight leading to a flood-like situation on Sunday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin announced that schools and other educational institutions around Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts would remain closed for the next two days.

While most parts of the city and suburbs were waterlogged due to the incessant rains throughout the night, parts of Saidapet, Velachery, Adambakkam, Madipakkam and West Mambalam witnessed inundation up to about two to three feet. The rain, which was reportedly the heaviest since 2015, was caused by formation of a low pressure over the Bay of Bengal.
