New Delhi, Mar 28: The Union home ministry on Friday asked state governments to stop mass exodus of migrant labourers to their home towns following the nationwide lockdown.

The ministry has written to all states and Union territories to take immediate steps to provide adequate support, including food and shelter, to migrant labourers during the ongoing lockdown.

The states were also advised to ensure that students and working women hostel inmates etc. are allowed to continue in their existing accommodation.

Notably, thousands of migrant workers were gathered in Ghazipur on the Delhi border on Friday desperate to reach their home towns in adjoining Utter Pradesh.

A mass exodus of migrant workers from cities in several states to their villages has raised concerned that the COVID-19 outbreak could turn into a humanitarian crisis.
