Centre approves memorial for Pranab Mukherjee at Rajghat

New Delhi, Jan 07: The central government has approved a dedicated site within the Rashtriya Smriti complex, situated in the Rajghat area, to build a memorial in honour of former President Pranab Mukherjee.

Pranab Mukherjee's daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her gratitude after meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

She wrote, "Called on PM Narendra Modi ji to express thanks and heartfelt gratitude for his government's decision to create a memorial for Baba. It’s even more cherished because we never asked for it. I am deeply moved by this unexpected but truly gracious gesture from the Prime Minister."

"Baba always said that state honors should not be sought, but should be freely offered. I am so grateful that PM Modi has honored Baba's memory in this way. It doesn't change anything for Baba, wherever he may be, beyond applause or criticism. But as his daughter, words cannot fully express my joy," she said.

Earlier, Sharmistha Mukherjee had commented on the ongoing debate surrounding the allocation of space for a memorial to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. She emphasized that the issue should not be politicized. 

"There should be no politics involved, as it has been our tradition to build memorials for former Prime Ministers. PV Narasimha Rao was an exception. Given Dr. Manmohan Singh's exceptional contributions, I firmly believe there should be no controversy regarding his memorial, and that he too deserves the Bharat Ratna," she stated.
