Centre approves appointment of three new Supreme Court judges

New Delhi, May 29: The Central Government on Thursday approved the elevation of three high court judges to the Supreme Court, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium.

The judges appointed to the apex court are Justice N.V. Anjaria, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, Justice Vijay Bishnoi, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and Justice A.S. Chandurkar, Judge of the Bombay High Court.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments on social media platform X, stating that President Droupadi Murmu had approved the elevations after consultation with Chief Justice B.R. Gavai.

The Collegium, headed by CJI Gavai, made the recommendations during a meeting held on May 26, 2025.

Profiles of newly appointed judges:

  • Justice N.V. Anjaria began his legal career at the Gujarat High Court in August 1988. He was appointed as an Additional Judge on November 21, 2011, and became a Permanent Judge on September 6, 2013. He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court on February 25, 2024.

  • Justice Vijay Bishnoi enrolled as an advocate on July 8, 1989, and practiced at the Rajasthan High Court and the Central Administrative Tribunal in Jodhpur. He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Rajasthan High Court on January 8, 2013, and made Permanent on January 7, 2015. He took charge as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on February 5, 2024.

  • Justice A.S. Chandurkar started his legal practice in Mumbai in July 1988 before moving to Nagpur in 1992. He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013.
