Mumbai, September 5: Two people were killed in separate incidents during Dahi Handi celebrations in Maharashtra on Saturday, while at least 42 'Govindas' sustained injuries in Mumbai and neighbouring Thane while forming human pyramids, officials said.

A seven-year-old boy died in Mumbai after a brick column collapsed on him during the festivities. In Pune, a woman was crushed to death after an iron frame fell on her, officials said.

Of the injured Govindas, 32 were hurt in Mumbai and another 10 sustained injuries in Thane while participating in human pyramid formations organised as part of the celebrations.

Dahi Handi is an integral part of the Janmashtami festival, which commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna. The festival witnessed enthusiastic participation across Maharashtra, with groups of Govindas forming multi-tier human pyramids to reach and break clay pots filled with curd and suspended high above the ground.

The celebrations, however, were marred by the fatalities and injuries, raising concerns over safety measures during the popular festivities.
