Bhubaneswar, Nov 3: A joint team of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and food safety officials have conducted raids at various sweet shops in Bhubaneswar today. The officials were inspecting the quality of the sweets being sold at these shops.

The raids have been conducted at sweet shops in all three zones under the BMC.

“Today we have conducted raids at sweet shops in Bapuji Nagar, Rajmahal Square and Mater canteen area. Samples are being collected which will be sent to the food safety laboratory. If we find any type of compromise in the quality of the sweets, necessary legal action will be taken by the concerned authority”, said food safety official.

The food safety officials were also inspecting the quantity of colouring materials used in the sweets and whether these materials were used within the prescribed limits or not. Besides, the quality of ingredients as well as the expiry dates of various milk-made sweets were also being checked.

Reacting upon the usage of artificial colouring materials in the sweets, a food safety official said, “Artificial colouring materials are allowed to be used within a prescribed limit. Excessive usage of these materials are hazardous to the health. Till now we have conducted raids at 5-6 sweet shops and we found no evidence of excessive use of colouring materials. If we find any such things in the subsequent raids, strict action will be taken against them”.

Regarding the frequent raids at various sweet shops around Diwali time, the BMC officials said that the demand for the sweets were generally high during the festive season.

The raids were conducted to ensure that people will get quality food materials so that their health will not be deteriorated, the official said.

“Diwali is around the corner and during this time people mostly buy sweets for their families. We will try to ensure that the quality of these sweets should be maintained properly so that nobody is affected by consuming the adulterated sweets”, said BMC official.

Worth mentioning, a joint team of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) and food safety officials had carried out a surprise inspection at several food stalls in Cuttack yesterday. They conducted a raid at the famous food outlet KFC in Badambadi after receiving several complaints. A large amount stale and sour bread and buns were seized from KFC.
