BMC deploys extra sanitary workers for clean Durga Puja Festivities

Bhubaneswar, Sept 29: In a strategic move to maintain cleanliness during the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed an additional 300 sanitary workers, augmenting the city’s existing workforce of 2,000. The initiative aims to keep the pandals and surrounding areas spotless throughout the festivities.

With a focus on efficient waste management, especially the disposal of puja flower waste, the civic body has introduced smaller vehicles dedicated to transporting waste to processing units. In cases of high waste volume or heavy crowd movement, larger vehicles will be rerouted to assist in waste management.

“There are a total of 171 pandals across the city. Most of these pandals will have two sanitation staff members, while smaller ones will be assigned one worker. These teams will continuously clean waste generated near pandals and food stalls. Our zero-waste littering policy will ensure no waste accumulates in public spaces,” said Kailash Chandra Das, Joint Commissioner of BMC.

In addition to this, puja committees have been instructed to install dustbins near pandals. Food stalls and shops are also required to maintain their own dustbins for waste disposal. Sanitation workers will regularly collect waste from these bins and transport it to designated vehicles.

Through these proactive measures, the BMC aims to ensure a clean and safe environment for both residents and visitors during the Durga Puja period.
