Bhubaneswar: A delegation of BJP leaders including party State unit president Basant Panda and Puri Lok Sabha candidate Sambit Patra and Samir Mohanty met Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) demanding arrest of BJD MLA Pradeep Maharathy in connection with the attack on election flying squad.
The saffron party demanded immediate arrest of Maharathy to ensure free and fair elections and threatened to resort to agitation if the CEO fails to take legal action against the BJD heavyweight.
On Sunday night, suspected BJD workers and supporters of Maharathy attacked polling officials when the latter was conducting a raid at Maharathy’s farmhouse at Hunkeipur in Pipili area in Puri district.
According to reports, a 15-member team of the flying squad, a Static Surveillance Team (SST) and a videography team led by Magistrate Rabi Narayan Patra raided the legislator’s farmhouse on getting information about distribution of money and liquor to influence voters ahead of third phase polls on April 23.
However, supporters of the MLA attacked the team. Besides Patra, four other officials also sustained injuries.
