Bhubaneswar: With only one day is left for filing of nominations for the October 21 Bijepur by-election, the Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to announce name of its candidate for the Assembly seat today.
It may be noted that the Congress and the BJD have already announced names their candidates. While the Congress has decided to field Dillip Kumar Panda, the BJD has relied again on former MLA Rita Sahu, widow of former Congress MLA Subal Sahu.
It may be noted that by-poll to the Assembly constituency has been necessitated after the BJD supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik vacated it in June. He retained his old Hinjili Assembly seat in Ganjam district. He had won two seats during the last elections.
According to political analysts, the BJP may again rely on Sanat Kumar Gartia with two points: one, Gartia had emerged second by grabbing 53,482 votes against winner Naveen’s 1,10,604 votes in the last election and, two, quitting of Naveen from the seat might be taken as “betrayal” and, thus, might work in his favour him .
It is worth mentioning that Congress’ Ripunath had lost his deposit despite emerging third with 14,344 votes. Probably on this point, the Congress has opted for Dillip, a youth leader of Bijepur.
As many as 2,32,005 voters comprising 1,19,916 males, 1,12,074 females and 15 thirdgenders are eligible to exercise franchise during the upcoming bypoll, according to reports.
