Bhubaneswar: While the BJD is holding a massive farmer rally at the Parliament in New Delhi demanding an increase in paddy MSP to Rs 2,930 per quintal, the BJP gheraoed the State Secretariat here opposing the State Government’s alleged apathetic attitude toward farmers.
A train full of BJD leaders and workers, including MPs and MLAs, are now holding a protest meeting in New Delhi alleging that the NDA Government has failed in implementing its various promises made before the 2014 elections. As per the BJD schedule, a delegation led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will meet President Ram Nath Kovind and submit a memorandum to him seeking increase in paddy MSP to Rs 2,930 per quintal, as per a resolution passed in the State Assembly nearly a year back, and implementation of Swaminathan Committee recommendations. About 2,000 people have attended the meeting.
In a counter move, the BJP gheraoed the State Secretariat here. While hundreds of BJP leaders and workers tried to enter the Secretariat after breaking the first barricade, a scuffle between them and the police erupted.
The BJP alleged that the State Government has failed to procure paddy from farmers at MSP of Rs 1,750, set by the Union Government and is not giving any bonus to farmers.
According to latest reports, the saffron party leaders and workers are now sitting on a dharna on the road now. They have also a plan to gherao Naveen Niwas later in the day.
