Bhubaneswar metro rail project to revamp with central government's support

Bhubaneswar, Aug 14: The long-delayed Bhubaneswar metro rail project is set to take a new direction, with the Central Government stepping in to support its construction. A significant move to revive the stalled project, the government of Odisha will now receive backing from the Centre, signaling a fresh push for progress.

In the second meeting held recently, it was announced that a technical committee will be formed to oversee the planning and development of the metro rail project in the state. This committee will conduct site assessments across various cities to evaluate the feasibility and present a report detailing recommendations for the metro tracks and overall infrastructure.

Additionally, a ministerial-level sub-committee will be constituted to ensure the project’s smooth execution, marking another step forward in the government’s renewed focus on the metro project.

A comprehensive mobility scheme has also been proposed, addressing the need for integrated urban transportation. The technical committee has been tasked with providing a detailed report on the metro track layout and parking facilities.

The government is also keen on incorporating public feedback into the planning process, ensuring that the views and concerns of the citizens are taken into account in the final design.

It is important to note that the state government had previously canceled the original contract for the metro project, which was awarded to Ceigall India Limited and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC Ltd.) under the previous administration. Despite repeated requests from the Odisha government, both companies failed to pay the required compensation as per the agreement, leading to the cancellation.

As a result, work on the metro project has been stalled for the last seven months. With the new plan in place, the future of the Bhubaneswar metro rail project appears to be heading toward a fresh start.
