Despite being completed nearly eight months ago at a cost of Rs100 crore, the solid waste management facility remained non-operational due to the absence of a formal inauguration. Local citizens, fed up with the prolonged delay and unresponsive authorities, decided to take symbolic action cutting ceremonial ribbons and breaking coconuts in traditional style to mark the plant’s official start.
The move was led by members of the ‘Aliagada Hatao O Sainik School Banchao Abhiyan’, a local outfit advocating for environmental justice, along with several residents of the area. “Local residents have inaugurated the dry waste treatment plant. For a long time, we have been urging the authorities to shift the dumping yard elsewhere,” said Basudev Bhatt, president of the Bhubaneswar Unnayan Parishad.
