Berhampur, Oct 6: Berhampur University in Odisha has taken disciplinary action against 17 post-graduate students for allegedly engaging in ragging. According to officials, four of the students have been instructed to vacate their hostel rooms, while 13 others have been fined Rs 1,000 each.
Vice-Chancellor Geetanjali Dash stated that the measures followed an investigation by the anti-ragging committee into an incident that occurred on September 21.
In a complaint filed with the University Grants Commission (UGC), several first-year post-graduate students reported that their seniors entered their hostel around 11 PM and insisted on asking various personal details, preventing them from sleeping. Notably, the complainants did not identify the seniors involved.
The university acted promptly after the UGC forwarded the complaint.
"The UGC requested an inquiry and an action report from the university, which we have already submitted," the VC noted.
She also mentioned that the institution has taken steps to educate students about the serious consequences of ragging, advising them to refrain from such behavior on campus.
