Beijing Stands with New Delhi, Opens its Markets as US Tariffs Loom

China Backs India, Calls US ‘a Bully’ Over Tariffs

In a significant and surprising diplomatic statement, China has publicly backed India in its escalating trade dispute with the United States. The Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, strongly condemned Washington's decision to impose steep tariffs on Indian goods, labeling the US "a bully" and vowing that Beijing would stand firmly with New Delhi.

Strong Rebuke of US Action

Speaking in New Delhi, Ambassador Xu accused the US of hypocrisy, stating that it was now weaponizing tariffs after benefiting from free trade for years. "Silence only emboldens the bully. China will firmly stand with India," he declared, making it clear that Beijing opposes the punitive measures. The ambassador emphasized that both India and China are major powers and should not allow external pressure to dictate their foreign policy choices.

Call for Deeper India-China Cooperation

The ambassador used the moment to call for a stronger strategic partnership between the two Asian giants, stating that in a turbulent world, "China and India are partners, not rivals." He signaled Beijing's readiness to expand cooperation on several fronts. This includes resuming direct flights to improve people-to-people connections and welcoming more Indian commodities into the Chinese market to "enlarge the cake of cooperation."

This offer of support comes as India faces a 50% total tariff on its exports to the US, a penalty for its continued purchase of Russian oil. China's intervention adds a complex new dimension to the dispute, positioning the two neighbors as a potential united front against what they see as unfair US trade practices.
