Bhubaneswar, Oct 4: A 52-minute documentary showcasing the rich cultural heritage, traditions and grandeur of Bargarh Dhanu Jatra was screened at a special event in Bhubaneswar on Saturday.
The documentary takes viewers through the remarkable journey of the 79-year-old festival, widely recognised as one of the world’s largest open-air theatre festivals. It presents the traditions, performances and community participation surrounding Dhanu Jatra, which brings alive the legendary tale of Lord Krishna and King Kansa from the Dwapara Yuga.
The special screening was attended by Bargarh MP Pradip Purohit as the chief guest, along with noted Odia actor Anu Choudhury and Sureshwar Satapathy, Secretary of the Dhanujatra Mahotsava Samiti, as special invitees.
Eminent personalities, government officials, artists, intellectuals, media professionals and representatives from the fields of art, literature and culture also attended the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Pradip Purohit appreciated the effort to document the festival and said such initiatives could help preserve its history and traditions for future generations. He expressed hope that the documentary would reach audiences beyond Odisha and serve as a useful resource for researchers, filmmakers and those interested in the cultural legacy of Dhanu Jatra.
The event also featured the unveiling of the documentary’s official poster and a special tribute to generations of artists, performers, organisers and cultural practitioners who have contributed to sustaining the festival over the decades.
Bhubaneswar Pradhan, who portrayed Maharaj Kansa in Bargarh Dhanu Jatra during several editions, including from 1998 to 2000, 2017 to 2020 and again in 2025, was specially honoured during the programme.
Several senior artists, child artistes, directors and members associated with the documentary were also felicitated for their contribution.
The documentary was directed by Suresh Patnaik, with Pranati Parida serving as co-producer. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Bhabani Prasad Mahanty.
The documentary is now available digitally, allowing audiences across India and abroad to explore the unique traditions and cultural heritage of Bargarh Dhanu Jatra.
