Balasore rain tragedy: Grandmother, grandson killed in mud wall collapse

Balasore, Aug 17: A grandmother and her grandson were killed while her granddaughter was critically injured after a mud wall collapsed on them while they were sleeping at their home in Kapasuda village under Jaleswar police limits in Balasore district.

The tragedy occurred amid days of incessant rainfall, which had weakened mud houses and left several areas of Netua panchayat waterlogged.

According to reports, the grandmother was sleeping with her grandson and granddaughter when the weakened mud wall suddenly collapsed onto them. All three were trapped beneath the debris.

On being alerted, local residents rushed to the spot and began a rescue operation. They managed to pull the three victims out from under the collapsed wall. However, the grandmother and grandson had already died.

The granddaughter, identified as Smrutirekha, sustained serious injuries.

Following the incident, Jaleswar BDO Gourang Ghosh and an ODRAF team reached the waterlogged area and helped evacuate the victims. The injured girl was initially taken to Jaleswar G.K. Bhattar Hospital and was later shifted to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital for advanced treatment.

The incident has highlighted the dangers faced by residents living in vulnerable mud houses amid prolonged monsoon rainfall. Several houses in the area remain surrounded by floodwater, raising concerns about further structural collapses.

Authorities are monitoring the situation in the affected areas and taking steps to assist residents impacted by the continuing rain and waterlogging.
