Bhubaneswar, Mar 12: The Odisha Assembly today could not function till afternoon as the Opposition BJP and Congress members created ruckus in the House threatening that they would not allow it to run till the government purchases all the paddy from the farmers lying in the mandis. Unable to run the House amid Opposition uproar Speaker Dr Surya Narayan Patro adjourned the proceedings till 4 pm. He directed food and civil supplies minister Ranendra Pratap Swain to make a statement in the House on the status of paddy procurement. As soon as the House met today after a break, Opposition BJP and Congress MLAs stormed the well of the House shouting slogans against the government for its failure to purchase the paddy stock of the farmers lying in the mandis despite the assurance of the minister earlier. The irate members also tried to climb the Speaker's podium to disrupt the proceedings. Though the Speaker adjourned the House till 11.30 for the first time, normalcy could not be restored on resumption of the Assembly. He therefore adjourned it till the lunch break is over. The Opposition members alleged that the government has destroyed the decorum of the House as it has failed to keep its assurance to procure all the paddy stock from the farmers.
