Asian Games: Indian jumper Ancy Sojan secures silver as China claims gold in thrilling finale

Indian athlete Ancy Sojan secures silver in dramatic finish

Indian long jumper Ancy Sojan captured the silver medal at the Asian Games in Nagoya on Sunday with a top effort of 6.53 metres. Her strong performance made her only the second Indian woman, joining athletic legend Anju Bobby George, to secure two medals in this high-profile continental event. This podium finish comes just months after she broke a 22-year national record by leaping 6.88 metres at the National Inter State Championships in June, proving her consistency on the international stage.

Late drama denies double podium

For most of the women's long jump final, Indian athletes looked perfectly positioned to bring home two medals. Sojan took control early with an opening jump of 6.49 metres, holding onto the gold medal spot until the very end. She even improved her mark in the fifth round to reach 6.53 metres. Her teammate, Shaili Singh, showed steady progress and consistency throughout the competition. Singh opened at 6.25 metres, followed with two jumps of 6.34 metres, and pushed further to 6.41 and finally 6.42 metres. That methodical buildup kept Singh safely in the bronze medal position going into the decisive final round of the evening.

Final round heartbreak

Chinese competitors completely changed the standings in their sixth and final attempts. Mengyi Tan leaped 6.46 metres, pushing Singh down into fourth place and erasing India's hopes for bronze. Moments later, Huang Y landed a powerful 6.55-metre jump, overtaking Sojan by just two centimetres to steal the gold medal. In her final chance to reclaim the top spot, Sojan managed a jump of 6.49 metres, which ultimately sealed her silver finish. Despite missing gold at the very end, this result wraps up an exceptional competitive year for the Indian standout, who earlier stated her record-breaking season proves India has jumpers capable of great range.
