Nabarangpur, May 19: A unique initiative in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district is drawing attention for its innovative approach to education, environment, and cultural preservation. The recently inaugurated Alphabet Garden, developed by the Odisha Forest Department during 2024–25, is the first of its kind in the state, offering a novel way to connect with both language and nature.

Spread across a verdant expanse, the garden features over 160 plant species, each linked to one of the letters of the Odia alphabet—from ‘ଅ’ to ‘ଲ’. Designed as a learning space as well as a green retreat, the Alphabet Garden aims to promote ecological literacy through the medium of mother tongue.

In addition to alphabet-linked plants, the garden also showcases trees representing all 28 districts of Odisha, creating a living map that reflects the state’s rich ecological and cultural diversity. Visitors can explore the garden district by district, discovering native species that hold significance in each region.

The project has already received state-level recognition for its educational value and environmental message. Forest officials say the garden is being positioned as a research and awareness hub for students, nature enthusiasts, and linguists alike.

“This initiative is not just about plants and letters—it’s about creating a deeper connection between people and the environment through language,” said a senior forest official involved in the project.

With its emphasis on sustainability, cultural pride, and experiential learning, the Alphabet Garden is expected to become a model for similar projects across the state, and possibly the country.
