Liverpool Premier League title defense looks unlikely says star Alexis Mac Allister

Star midfielder admits Arsenal and Man City are far ahead

Liverpool’s grip on the English top flight is slipping. Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has delivered a blunt assessment of the club’s current standing, suggesting that a back-to-back triumph is now out of reach. Despite being the defending champions, the Reds find themselves struggling to keep pace with the league's frontrunners.

Speaking with Sky Sports, Mac Allister expressed his disappointment over the team's inability to maintain the high standards set last year. He pointed out that while rivals like Arsenal and Manchester City are thriving, Liverpool has failed to find consistency. The Argentine midfielder noted that internal changes and the arrival of new players have altered the team dynamic, making a Liverpool Premier League title charge feel increasingly unrealistic.

"I hate to say it, but the chances are slim," Mac Allister confessed. He noted that the gap in performance between Liverpool and the top two teams is significant. Currently, after 19 matches, Liverpool sits in fourth place with 33 points. This leaves them a staggering 15 points behind league leaders Arsenal, who have amassed 48 points. Aston Villa and Manchester City follow closely in second and third with 42 and 41 points respectively.

Manager Arne Slot echoed these sentiments earlier in the week. Slot remarked that the race has effectively narrowed down to two teams. He admitted that Arsenal and Manchester City have created a substantial cushion, especially after Arsenal's recent victory over Aston Villa. According to Slot, Liverpool must focus on their own game rather than looking at the top of the table.

Despite the dim outlook in the league, Mac Allister remains hopeful about other silverwares. He emphasized that the squad is still determined to fight for the Champions League and the FA Cup. "When you represent this club, you fight for everything," he added. For the fans, the focus now shifts from defending the league crown to securing success in knockout competitions.
