New Delhi, Jan 5: Indian Air Force (IAF) chief VR Chaudhary on Wednesday met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at the official residence of the Defence Minister and gave him a detailed presentation on the chopper crash that killed Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat. The incident occurred on December 8, 2021, when a military helicopter carrying 14 people including Gen Bipin Rawat and his wife crashed near Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu. Following the crash, a tri-service inquiry, led by Air Marshal Manvendra Singh was ordered to probe the reasons for this accident. The inquiry committee assumed an attempt of CFIT or Controlled Flight Into Terrain by the pilot which meant the MI-17v5 pilot may have been left disoriented by inclement weather and accidentally flown into terrains. Sources also said that the inquiry denied any possibility of technical errors or mechanical defects as The chopper was a Russian-made Mi-17V5 helicopter and is considered extremely reliable and safe.
