Jajpur, Oct 23: Ahead of the panchayat polls due next year, the Jajpur district witnessed defection. BJP’s 2019 Bari Assembly constituency candidate Biswaranjan quit the party on Wednesday. BJP youth leader and state executive member Mallick resigned from the primary membership of the party.
Mallick is likely to join BJD soon. Mallick had joined BJP in 2017 after quitting Congress. He had contested the 2019 elections from Bari on BJP ticket but lost to BJD candidate Sunanda Das by a narrow margin of 4,062 votes.
Apart from Mallick, Zilla Parishad member of ward-24, Bari block chairperson, and vice-chairperson have quit the party and are likely to embrace ruling Biju Janata Dal (BDJ).
According to media reports, around 30 sarpanches and samiti members will quit the party soon and they are expected to join the ruling BJD. This is attributed to BJP’s infighting after Mallick quit the party.
However, the BJP said that defection is very common during elections. “There is nothing new in quitting party during elections. This won’t affect the party,” said Goutam Ray, vice-president of the Jajpur district unit of BJP.
Worth mentioning, BJP’s Dharmashala Assembly seat candidate Tushar Parida along with his supporters had joined the BJD.
