Odisha: Woman killed after being run over by grandson in property dispute

Jajpur, Dec 19: A 70-year-old woman was allegedly killed after being run over by her grandson in Odisha’s Jajpur district following a property dispute, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Thursday at Khandarapur-Singada village under the Panikoili Police Station limits. According to police, the accused, a 23-year-old man, deliberately drove his vehicle into his grandmother, Kuli Sahoo, resulting in her death on the spot.

Villagers alleged that the elderly woman was neglected by her son and had been compelled to live at her married daughter’s house. Unable to endure what locals described as prolonged physical and mental harassment by her son, Sahoo had earlier approached the local police with a complaint. She had also transferred a portion of her land to her daughter, a move that reportedly sparked the property dispute.

Police said the incident occurred while Sahoo was returning to her native village with her daughter. While the elderly woman was fatally struck by the vehicle, her daughter narrowly escaped injury.

After the incident, the accused fled the scene along with his vehicle. Police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by the victim’s daughter and are investigating the matter.
