Berhampur, May 29: The body of 94-year-old retired professor of medicine, Dr. Prafulla Chandra Sahu, was donated to the government-run MKCG Medical College in Berhampur on Wednesday, fulfilling his final wish.
His sons, Lalatendu Sahu and Bibhudendu Sahu, handed over the body to the medical college authorities in the presence of relatives and social activists. Prior to this, Dr. Sahu’s eyes were donated to the medical college’s eye department.
“As per his last wish, we decided to donate his eyes and body to the medical college,” said Lalatendu Sahu.
Dr. Sahu had formally pledged to donate his body on July 30, 2019, by submitting a letter to the college’s anatomy department.
“The body will be invaluable for students’ education and research,” said Dr. Sagar Prusty, professor in the Department of Anatomy.
During his distinguished career, Dr. Sahu served at three government medical colleges in Berhampur, Cuttack, and Burla. He was also actively involved in various social organizations and was known for providing free healthcare services to the underprivileged.
This marks the fifth body donation to MKCG Medical College in 2025 and the 34th over the past 12 years. Dr. Prusty noted that the college currently has the capacity to store around 40 cadavers and also supplies bodies to other newly established medical colleges.
“We are encouraged by the growing number of people choosing to donate their bodies for medical education,” he said.
