Odisha: 89-year-old man walks 11 km for old-age pension

Gajapati, May 16: An 89-year-old man walks almost 11 km for his pension in Gajapati. He was spotted by our reporter on Thursday on his way to the Gram Panchayat office in order to get his old age pension. Mandal Bhuyan of Govindpur village under Raygarh block walks all the way to Jalang Gram Panchayat office to draw his pension every month since years together. However, now it has turned a difficult task for him to walk such a long distance at this age, following which he had requested the authorities to provide his pension and grocery at his doorstep, but in-vain. Finding no way out Mandal ventured for the GP office on Thursday. For which he started his journey early in the morning and trudged to the GP office by the noon despite Corona scare and scorching sun. "If the panchayat authorities will be kind enough to deliver my pension at home I will be grateful to them. Otherwise, I can’t walk anymore for collecting it in the coming months," said Mandal. Notably, the government has launched doorstep service for providing grocery under Food Security Act during the pandemic while old age pension is yet to be distributed at the doorsteps.
